Sophia J Mitchell is a figurative artist whose work explores the beauty and essence of everyday human life. Working primarily in oil paint and drawing, she creates naturalistic portraits and intimate scenes that reflect the quiet moments of connection shared across cultures. Through careful observation of light, gesture, and expression, her work invites viewers to slow down and experience the subtle richness found in ordinary life.

Born and raised in British Columbia, Sophia began formal training in traditional painting and drawing at the age of ten under the guidance of a private instructor. She later earned her BFA in Studio Arts from Concordia University in Montréal in 2014, where she developed a deep affinity for classical approaches to oil painting and figurative work. In 2015 she moved to the mountains of New Mexico, where the colors, light, and cultural diversity of the Southwest continue to influence her art.

Alongside her studio practice, Sophia is a multi-instrumentalist and has spent over a decade performing internationally as both a live painter and musician with performance art groups including Artrageous and The Pink Flamingos. In these performances she creates large-scale paintings on stage during concerts and events around the world, blending visual art and music into a shared live experience.

Her work has received multiple awards and is held in private collections internationally. Through her art, Sophia hopes to offer moments of reflection that invite viewers to recognize something of themselves in others.
